Christmas Lunch

On 5 November, we gathered in the Vice-Chancellor’s Suite at Old Government House for our annual End-of-Year and Christmas lunch. The celebration featured delicious food, a fun spectrogram reading competition, and a Secret Santa exchange!

Speech Group Writing Retreat
July 2025
We organised a two-day writing retreat filled with focused writing, collaborative discussions, and valuable insights. The retreat also included two sessions on writing tips, delivered by A/Prof Peter Keegan and Dr Satwinder Singh.

Gibbons Lecture Series 2025

Professor Catherine Watson and Dr Jesin James from the Speech Group delivered a lecture on AI-based Māori pronunciation tools and participated as panelists in the Gibbons Lecture Series on ‘Exploring the Application of AI in Education’ on 27 May 2025. Speech Group @ SST Conference

Speech Group members actively participated in the 19th Australasian International Conference on Speech Science and Technology, held from December 3rd to 5th in Melbourne, Australia.

LangSoc 2023

The Speech Group at the University of Auckland hosted the 2023 Annual Conference of the Linguistic Society of New Zealand. The event featured a Māori Language Research Symposium on 28 November, followed by the Language and Society Conference from 29–30 November, both held at the Grafton Campus.
Third Māori Speech Hui 2023
June 25 2023
Māori Speech Hui 2023 was held on 6–7 July at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Auckland. This hui provided a platform for groups and individuals working across all aspects of Māori speech technologies to connect, share knowledge, and collaborate. Māori Speech Technology Workshop 2021

We organised a Māori Speech Technology Workshop – an opportunity for students to learn about te reo Māori speech and language technology development from industry experts and academics. 30 students from different parts of Aotearoa attended the workshop.
